Ok that made me cry really hard. Maybe I’m just emotional from last nights performances and how sad I feel that AI is clearly favoring another contestant. His sweet note just shows that he is everything that the AI should be. Love ya David, I’m voting next week until my hands bleed!
Comment by Kat97 | May 14, 2008
I do not understand why producers wpould not let the song be sang the way david wanted to sing it…I dont get at all whats going on!!!!the only conclusion i can come to is that the american idol is already chosen(COOKIE)and if thats the case well thats a sorry sorry way to run a show..David we love you and win or lose we always will..you are a winner in my heart and no producer can make me change that opinion of you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Comment by Tami | May 14, 2008
I don’t think we should read too much into the decisions that get made on arrangements and song choices. The producers know that the show is more about entertainment than it is about competition–especially at this point. I guarantee that most of the hand-wringing and hair-pulling going on in the executive suites of 19 Entertainment right now is about issues and concerns that go far beyond next week. Arrangement ideas come up and get ditched all the time. Given the extremely short time-frames, if one thing in an arrangement isn’t working, it is sometimes easier to just throw out the whole thing rather than take the time to fix it.
And even if TPTB (read: Nigel) is favoring Cook at this point (this much seems obvious according to reports from the studio), this is not necessarily a bad thing. Please read my comments at http://www.notingdavid.org/?p=23 before getting too worked up over a possible second-place finish for Archie.

OMG..that letter made me cry.. This young man is so amazing and has touched my heart with everything he has done, sang or said that I am a different person because of him!
Comment by ealbino | May 14, 2008
HI…would somebody please consider making this link to Richard’s interview more readily accessible. I can’t get into it….says I need to sign up. thanks!
Comment by baobabs727 | May 14, 2008
OMG WE SOULD START A PETITION TO LET DAVID WEAR THE EAR PEICE!!!! COME ON LETS HELP ARCHIE.. DO WHAT EVER YOU CAN!!!! he needs it so he can focus on the song and hear himself.
Comment by iza | May 14, 2008
After watching last night’s show, it’s apparent that David Cook has apparently been selected as TCO (The Chosen One), but maybe David Archuleta who epitomizes who a TRUE American Idol should be, may be better off in the long run.
In the words of Benjamin Linus (from Lost) - “But you’ll understand soon enough that there are consequences to being chosen. Because destiny (DC) is a fickle b*&^%!”
I think that sums everything up very nicely.
Comment by archftw | May 14, 2008
Look, this is creating too much drama. This is part of the problem. I think Richard should back off and not be talking about this. Let David work directly with the show itself. He is maturing and needs to be independent and work it out himself. David did a great job. Simon was critical of the song, not David.
Comment by amd | May 14, 2008
Rascal, I thought your right up was wonderful, you really have a way with words and David IS bigger than AI. But I still want him to win, lol. Seeing the confetti fall on someone else just doesn’t seem right to me.
Comment by Kat97 | May 14, 2008
I’m always amazed when I read commentary from different sites that blog on Idol who think that David Archuleta is a “Disney” talent. David Archuleta is as close as we have come in the last decade or so to a young Elton John. I wish he had the chance this season to cover one of Elton John’s songs (here he is in 1970…http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTa8U0Wa0q8) The producers would have been “on the money” with this song instead of Dan Fogelberg. I’m personally going to be glad with Idol is over and like David said last Friday, he can sing “without being judged.”
Comment by BYUForDavid | May 14, 2008
Richard,
When you do speak to the Archuletas, if there’s any way to do so, please let David and his family know that he has a huge and very supportive fan base who recognize that his songs were beautiful last night. We are captivated by his voice and talent.
I am very frustrated by Idol this season. I will finish the season because of Archie, and then I’m done with it all. It makes no sense to have a competition in which the judges/producers take such a strong hand in guiding audience opinion.
Comment by Kathy | May 14, 2008
Rascal - Thank you for your article. You are indeed a gifted writer. I also really enjoyed the comments posted in response. I am so torn. Like all of David’s Fans I want what is best for him. I am very disappointed in AI and I cannot understand their motives. I have never watched AI (consistently) before and I will not watch again. David is the only reason I have devoted so much time to watching and voting and worrying. It will be a bitter sweet day for me when AI is over. David’s family cannot speak but I wonder how they feel. They have experienced everything first hand and have endured the frustration. What does David really want and what do his parents think is best for him??? After attending David’s Homecoming and seeing the control that AI had on him I couldn’t help but wonder what his life would be like if he did win AI. I will continue to vote and vote and vote and I hope everyone else will also. Then, we can place the outcome in God’s hands - He knows what is best for David.
Comment by Jennifer | May 14, 2008
That letter from David was to me. I was stunned that he wrote back to me. The gist of my letter to him was that he has really brought music back into my life, and that we (fans) love him unconditionally, no matter what happens: we just want him to sing what is in his heart. He brings us such joy.
Comment by Jenny | May 14, 2008
If this is true, that is not cool. However, I’m not sure it is helping David for this kind of information to be leaked. It makes it look like sour grapes. I’m really surprised that Dean is allowed to talk to the media. I thought AI made everyone sign something to not give interviews?
Comment by amber | May 14, 2008
JennyGirl, Thank you for sharing that letter with the world. You are a special, special woman who has a God-given talent with words. It is an honor to know you and I am thankful that this amazing talent brought us all together. Cheers! Lexington or BUST!
Comment by Gail Hyatt | May 14, 2008
Amber: It wasn’t Dean. It was Richard and he has been chatting with us on FanBlast. Not sure he ever signed anything to not give interviews! Eric?
Comment by BabyDavid/Jules | May 14, 2008
Jules: ok, I thought it said Dean, but either way, I’m surprised any of them, Dean, Richard, or Brett, are allowed to talk about anything that is happening behind the scenes. I’m not complaining, I love the info. I’m just afraid it is making David look like he’s a poor sport, even though he has nothing to do with it.
Comment by amber | May 14, 2008
Amber: I understand your point, but I don’t see it as making look like David is a poor sport! They are telling facts! Anyway….
Comment by BabyDavid/Jules | May 14, 2008
I don’t care who agrees with me, but I think it’s patently unfair that they keep David from modernizing these old songs they give him to sing. It sounds like “Longer” would have been HOT! But, they said no way. David also wanted to make “Think of Me” into a current song. They put the kabosh on that one, too.
Then, they take away his monitor so he can’t hear himself or the band clearly. What’s with that? I think they want to give Cook the advantage. I’m for petitioning for them to give David a monitor! He’s the one the people scream for, he’s the one who can’t hear and who does runs and changes up melodies. He needs the dang thing!
I’d be up in arms about all this if I hadn’t read Rascal’s piece this morning. I am beginning to think he’s right, that David would be better off with the freedom to choose his own path–especially after how I see Idol treating him, now.
The one thing that keeps me from stepping completely on Rascal’s side of the argument is my desire to see David showered with confetti, grinning from ear to ear, wiping away tears, and driving off in that car.
I wonder, though, how much of this is selfishness on my part. I would get SUCH a kick out of seeing David win; I’d be euphoric! However, as soon as Idol ends David would get signed by a major label, anyway, could buy the car of HIS choice, could do what PLEASED HIM and not Idol. I’m wondering if I’m not holding David back by power voting. What would be best for DAVID and not me? Does David want to win for us or for himself? I’m not sure.
Comment by Bookaholic | May 14, 2008
I just wish we would of heard that arrangement… :X As beautiful job as Archie did with Longer, I was not loving that song(not his fault at all)
Comment by frogcooke | May 14, 2008
Oops. I left out an essential sentence that doesn’t really change my quandry but is still crucial to my dichotomy. It is that I really want to see David win because he DESERVES it. I shouldn’t have left that fundamental piece of information out of the mix.
I’m still confused about where I stand, now. Rascal has got my head awhirl.
Comment by Bookaholic | May 14, 2008
LOL Bookaholic - rascal is such a rascal isn’t he?
I can’t wait until David is unleashed - I’ve always said he’s quietly brewing and to watch out when is set free! The rearrangement of Longer is just one example of what he is capable of — I really can’t wait to hear his own material. Now THAT will blow me away!
Comment by Josie | May 14, 2008
David is an awesome preformer, I could see in his eyes on the last song he was not happy, now we all know why! Jenny thanks for sharing your letter.
DA-FTW
Thank you David for sharing your gift with us.
Comment by David | May 14, 2008
It was not his fault that song has the dumbest words. I mean “longer than fishes in the sea” who the heck says that!?! He made the best with what he had and he deserves the best which may not be winning. I don’t know if I want these psycho idol people in his face telling him what to do when to go potty and when to eat. But, if that’s what he wants I will help him get there. He better be in the finale or I say we all go protest infront of the Nokia! LOL
Comment by Mandy | May 14, 2008
I think that if he does come in second, that as a fan base we need to all tell him somehow that he did actually win - he won all of our hearts, let us all hear him sing the entire season, and he will win the contract of his choice and be able to go forward in his own way.
No matter what, it would be nice to have another homecoming celebration and crown him our winner.
Comment by Mary | May 14, 2008
I hope no one is actually going to quit voting… David has said himself that he wants to win. That’s all we need to know!
Comment by amber | May 14, 2008
I’m not going to quit voting, even though I’m torn. It’s like I have to vote to tell David how much I appreciate him.
Comment by Mary | May 14, 2008
I’ve always loved the song, “Longer”…showing my age here…gooey, sappy song that it is. It’s beautiful. David made it even more beautiful. We knew he would.
Comment by Mary | May 14, 2008
Okay, I’ve made up my mind to continue as before. David is giving it everything he’s got, so I’m going to give him everything I’ve got. He’s trying his best to win, so I’ll back him up. I’ll go to the wall for this kid. Pedal to the metal!
If Cook wins, I’ll live. David will live. But, I will know that I did all I could to help David achieve his dream. If it doesn’t work as we hope, Rascal will be my solace.
We all know David is the superlative talent out of the bunch by far. He will by wildly successful, in my opinion. So, whatever happens, he’ll be fine. The job at hand is to try to get him that crown, do what we can, and let the chips fall where they may.
All doubts aside, now! Back to trying to figure out how to power vote with the new GoPhone.
HEY! HOW CAN WE DO THAT PETITION DRIVE TO GET DAVID A MONITOR FOR NEXT WEEK?? Does someone have the know-how and the commitment? It could make more of a difference for David than anything besides our voting. Being confident because of it, spot-on, and singing like an angel could draw in millions of casual voters. Where’s Lucid?!
Comment by Bookaholic | May 14, 2008
I hate Idol..They are releasing LONGER as the itunes instead of the other two songs…WHY WHY didn’t they let him re-arrange it to be more current?
WHY? because he would have stole the show and they want their rocker to win this year.. uggggggg.. I’m through with Idol after Archie leaves….
Comment by ealbino | May 14, 2008
I’m not surprised. I was afraid “Longer” would be the studio. I’m sure it’s beautiful, though, since it’s David:)
Comment by amber | May 14, 2008
awwwh. David is such an amazing person. and im so glad that he got a chance to reach out to his fans. and i hope he’ll reply to my letter :] haaha
Comment by vivian | May 14, 2008
I remembered one of the judges said, that AI is all about David Archuleta, that remains in my heart. David Archuleta is the American Idol. The AI title I am alluding to is not the criteria of the executives and/or producers of the show. But, the embodiment of a pure stellar artist.
:-)
Comment by RIKA | May 14, 2008
Okay here I go…I hope I make sense!!! In my humble opinion!!!
AI needed to “pimp” David Cook like crazy last night, (he was flat) because he was behind David Archuleta quite a bit last week in the votes and Seyesha was moving up quite quickly! They were very concerned that the 2 David’s would not be in the final 2…it would possibly be David A. and Seyesha…which is not what they wanted…so to prevent this from happening…they needed to pimp David Cook and tell Seyesha that she wasn’t going to make it to the final 2…Paula even said that last night and she never says anything like that…they told her to say that…imo. So when tonight’s results take place we will see David Vs David and then they will be pulling for David Archuleta because he’s going to make them a heck of a lot more money than the other David…stretch?…I don’t think so! Let’s wait and see!!!
Go Big “D”…
Comment by Brett | May 14, 2008
Correction on spelling…”Syesha”…Heck what do I know…I can’t even spell her name correctly!!!!!!!!
Go Big “D”…
Comment by Brett | May 14, 2008
archftw;
I love your comment , anyway, no matter what he’s truly American Idol, it’s not just a title.
Comment by Sam | May 14, 2008
I have been so upset since the show ended last night. My feelings and thoughts coincide with much of what is posted here. I disturbs me that now we, the community of people who support David unconditionally are left with mixed emotions regarding the outcome of Idol. I agree with the others - - no matter what David is everything a true American Idol should be and whether or not he wins, he will evolve into one of the most iconic artists of all time. Since David has said that he wants to win American Idol, I will continue to vote like crazy..two mobile phones(texting), plus a land line and next week I plan to have gizmo on both of my computers running (is that possible?) but I can not shake how horrible AI was to him last night and how unhappy he looked. This is my last year watching Idol. What they have done is irreprehensible. They built him up all season then with two weeks left in the competition, they threw him and his family to the media wolves and then throw him under the bus with a horrific song choice. Now from reading this, I see that they have taken away his artistic freedom and denied him ear monitors? Who is being abusive now?
Comment by RoseAnn | May 14, 2008
I think that if the reports about the produser’s behavior are correct and if David is voted off tonight, I will never watch the show again. I have been a loyal watcher/caller/concert goer/CD buyer for EVERY season. It sounds like the adults involved should grow up and act like David!
Comment by thom | May 14, 2008
Unless and until David tells us that he does not want to win Amercian Idol, then I will continue to do everything I can to get him there:
1) By voting myself.
2) By encouraging friends, family, and neighbors to vote.
3) By leaving positive comments about David on message boards, etc.
4) By contacting media outlets, especially those that serve the Hispanic community. (There are lots of votes for David that can come from there. Join with me in this endeavor, especially if you speak Spanish, because I don’t!)
Whether he wins or comes in second, David will be under contract to American Idol/19 Entertainment. I, for one, believe he will have more leverage if he wins.
If you want to write to American Idol with your comments, here are a couple of email addresses:

All you guys, esp Richard and whoever, please please do not create any more drama. Just let it be. It’s becoming like WE ARE AFRAID that Baby DA is going to lose?! Sour grapes! It’s going to affect DA in the long run…… Let’s be positive.. This is NOT helping DA at all.
Comment by dada8 | May 15, 2008
Here’s something fun for y’all. When I first saw DA’s handwriting in that letter, I was ecstatic, because I can analyze his handwriting! This is all for fun, so here goes:
1) Pressure – the amount of pressure the writer uses when he writes. It’s hard to see this in the copy of the letter but I can see that it’s pretty above-average dark lettering. The darker the writing means the heavier the pressure when he writes which in turn means the more emotional energy he has. Higher physical and mental energy as seen by the amount of pressure on the writing indicates usually a highly successful person with a lot of vitality and emotional experience that last for a long time.
2) Slant – his writing slants to the right, which denotes one who responds strongly to emotional situation and is considered caring, warm, and outgoing. This type of person usually wears his/her heart on his/her sleeve. This fits DA pretty well. (A vertical slant writer tends to keep their emotions in check, as in mind over heart mentality. A left leaning slant indicates concealment of the writer’s emotions, and is observed as cold or indifferent.)
3) Baseline – is the real or imagined line where small letters rest, which determines a person’s emotional control and reliability. A normal baseline should be slightly wavy. DA’s baseline is slightly wavy, which means he has good emotional control and is reliable.
4) Size of the writing – indicates ability to concentration. Smaller lettering means greater concentration, and larger lettering means a lack of concentration. DA’s concentration is average. An ascending baseline means optimism, and a descending baseline means pessimism. DA’s baseline is slightly descending which denotes slight pessimism.
5) Spacing between letters – average spacing means the person is self-confident and feels comfortable and at ease. DA’s is average.
6) Spacing between words – denotes closeness with others. DA’s spacing between words is slightly wider than average, which means he tends to avoid people contact. We see this on stage with how he interacts with others – very little direct physical contact. He seems uncomfortable with screaming crowds.
The other thing I notice about his handwriting is how neat it is, which means he’s very disciplined. He prints his writing as opposed to writing it, which to me, means he’s more concerned that others are able to read what he writes, unlike doctors’ handwritings which denote they don’t care if others can read their writing. It indicates how he’s more sensitive to the messages being received.

I am a big fan of David’s and I applaud your general efforts to devote time and energy to his rise to stardom…but you do him no favors by posting angry grumblings from “Team’ Archuleta–while the assertions may be true, it seems the high road is to remain quiet and let David’s talent speak above all else. He has won plenty of people over just by opening his mouth and letting a joyful sound float from his heart. He has shown a lot of grace, composure and integrity throughout all of this. I applaud him. I hope he sings his heart out next week, just for the joy of it. In my mind, he’s a winner no matter what.
Comment by Lil Me | May 15, 2008
I agree wholeheartedly with dada8 and Lil Me. While it is tempting and may feel good in the short run to come running to David’s defense and “expose” what appears to be unfair favoritism by the Idol producers, stop and think for a minute. Is that what David would want us to do? I think NOT. We all admire David for his class, his humility, and his graciousness. Whining about obstacles the show puts in his way is something David would ever do. TRUST THE ARCHULETA. It was his voice and his attitude that made Amercia fall in love with him. Trust that this is just as true today as it was before. We have the power.
Dignity, people! Dignity! And VOTE LIKE YOU MEAN IT!
Comment by SeattleArchie | May 15, 2008
Just noticed a typo — obviously, I meant that whining about unfairness is something David would NEVER do.
Comment by SeattleArchie | May 15, 2008
I know we should let it go but I so sick in my stomach just thinking how dirty they are. Apart from that, I am afraid if the producer’s will do it again in the finale! It just so unfair!!!! This season will the last season for me. I can’t stand it anymore!!!
Comment by Elyza | May 15, 2008
I’m sick of all the talk about how Archuleta is not the chose one anymore. I think they helped him out by not allowing the different arrangement of Longer. A hip hop version for him? I don’t think so. To me, it just seems like “Team Archuleta” is trying to steal little David’s spotlight by forcing their ideas on them. It’s David, and only David, competing and if he wins, it’s his title- not his “team’s”. That’s probably why the producers didn’t want to use his arrangement anyway since it’s supposed to be David’s idea- hence, that’s why the “ban” was put into place.
Comment by AC | May 15, 2008
Did anyone record the Hip Hop version of Longer? You know, like for David to listen to and practice with? I would LOVE to hear it David’s (and Richard’s) way!
Comment by Momma Becky | May 15, 2008
Vote for David A.!!!!! David, you are my most favorite contestant in American idol. You are a brilliant singer. You are awesome!!! You can beat Cook.. We will vote for ya and I hope you win. I really dont watch American Idol until you auditioned. I keep supporting you everyday. You are the best person in the world for me.. Please dont change. I love listening to your music and watching all your videos. I love your personality , looks , voice , all! Do your best for your fans and that we will never stop voting for you until our hands bleed. Keep focus , practice practice practice! We love you. We love watching you in tv.I personally don’t like David Cook’s voice at all. I’m sick of all these “rockers” like him. Theres way too many of them in the music industry. I want to see someone like you , David Archuleta , in the music industry, Not David cook. I think this whole competition was rigged. I love American Idol but the judges are letting David Cook get away with things that David Archuleta can’t get away with. I’m sick of it. Prove that to them David.

Wow, it must’ve been nice to recieve a message from David himself!
You’re very lucky!
and not to be mean, but stop discriminating against DC and/or leaving rude comments.
This is a fan community for DA, and we should be focusing on him and be more positive.
In my opinion they’re both great singers, and David Archuleta is WAYYYY cuter and stuff, but evidently more people thought DC was more capable.
We should not put the artist or his fans down for that.
I LOVE DAVID JAMES ARCHULETA!♥
Comment by Amanda | June 4, 2008
Yeah, I 100% agree with Amanda. We should not say mean things about DC. This is a fanblast for David A anyway. Why should we hate DC, when David Archuleta doesn’t??
AM I RIGHT? :]
Comment by Assha | June 4, 2008
Nobody should hate DC. He is also a very talented person. ALthough we all like David Archuleta better it doesnt mean that we cant apreciate the music that DC brings out as well. In some ways it is better off that DC won because David Archuleta may have been a little overwhelmed with being THE AI. He already has had a million interviews and is meeting really cool people. i think think of the davids as equals in talent, although i happen to have a MUCH larger liking for David Archuleta!!!!!!
<3
Comment by Emma | June 4, 2008
I really think that David Archuleta not being the American Idol was best for him after all. I mean Archie will be able to do his own thing apart from Idol and not have to be branded an American Idol for the rest of his career(unlike David Cook). Archie will be able to express himself through his music without having to try to constantly please American Idol. I’m sure that Archie will have an amazing, long musical career even without winning the title, and there are still many things in store for him.
